History Ireland Hedge School – Mel Gibson’s Braveheart 20 years on
It’s nearly 20 years since the release of the film on Scotland’s national hero, William Wallace, shot mainly in Ireland with the co-operation of the Irish Defence Forces. But who was the real William Wallace? Are the film’s departures from the historical record justified on artistic grounds or an exercise in Anglophobia? What was it like on the set? What was the film’s impact on emerging Scottish nationalism? Join History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, to address these and related questions with Prof. Sean Duffy (TCD Dept. of Medieval History) and Col. Pearse McCorley (OC Reserve Defence Forces personnel on the set).

Good storytelling is all about light and dark. The example of others inspires us. We learn something new that shocks us. Laughter is found in the most unlikely places.
Soundings: Holy Trinity is a talking shop with a purpose – to do all of the above. In this new live show-come-podcast, broadcaster Dylan Haskins and acclaimed singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan are joined by a Holy Trinity of guests from different walks of Irish life who will present you, the congregation, with their three stories to motivate, to shock and to humour. Each section is bridged with live performance of songs on those same themes from our musical guest.
Soundings began life as a culture podcast in October 2013. Within a few days of launching it went to #1 on the iTunes podcast chart in Ireland and by December it had reached #5 on the US iTunes Literature Podcast chart. Included in the Irish Independent’s 2014 list of ’10 of the World’s Greatest Podcasts’, Soundings has continued to regularly hit the top spot in Ireland and currently has over 40,000 listeners, with celebrity guests included Dermot O’Leary (BBC & ITV) and Harry Shearer (The Simpsons, This Is Spinal Tap). This event will be the launch of their new Soundings: Holy Trinity! format to a small audience in the intimate surroundings of the historic eighteenth century City Assembly House.

It’s lively, informed chat with a fresh, unpretentious feel.

Irish Independent – Niall Byrne

“This new cultural magazine series manages the rare feat of being confident, erudite and varied without disappearing in a haze of its own pretensions. Presented by Dylan Haskins and Lisa Hannigan – a pair of erudite, witty London–based Dubliners
