Faith in a Crisis: Religion and Spirituality in an Economic Fox Hole.

They say there are no atheists in a fox hole, but are there? What is the socio-economic impact of the recession on spirituality and church attendance? Are people returning to their religious roots, finding new faiths or adopting atheism in the face of the fiscal freeze?
Do crises drive certain people to organised religion and why?
Has the downturn made us more moralistic? Can we afford not to have some kind of faith?

As we reel from the impact of the global economic disaster still unfolding around us, we instinctively yearn for leadership to provide reassurance, solutions and hope. Will this yearning be fulfilled by political leaders or from a new source? Is Ireland endowed with leaders of sufficient quality to dig us out of this hole? Who has the necessary qualities? Should we not be very wary of “strong leadership” given the murderous history of such leaders responding to economic crises?
